Can fleas live on people?
The overall answer to this is No. They prefer the warmer bodies of animals such as cats and dogs. They also like living in carpets, clothes and other fabrics that are around the house. Fleas will bite humans, as you may of seen at some point when you pet has had fleas. They tend to leave 2 or 3 bites in a line that are instantly itchy and become sore as the week progresses until they start to heel. Scratching them, although unavoidable at times does tend to make them worse, as they can become easily irritated.
Human fleas were more common years ago but have become quite rare as time has gone on. In years gone by human fleas were caught by people working on farms, especially if people had been in close contact with pigs or pig sty?s.
If you are in a position where you have been unfortunate enough to catch human fleas then all is not lost as there are remedies for getting rid of the little pests. It is not possible to completely get rid of fleas but working with the help of your local doctor you will be given treatment and advice on how to treat yourself and your home in order to remove evidence of the nuisance fleas. This process may need to be carried out several times in order to be most effective.
It is really important that you seek medical advice if you think you have human fleas and you must NEVER use any of the over the counter products that you can buy for animals as these will not work and could end up making you rather ill.
You must also seek medical help from your doctor if you have been bitten by any type of flea and you have had a reaction to the bite, this may be due to you being allergic to flea saliva or the flea could be carrying disease as they have been know to do in some cases.
