Does Borax get rid of fleas?
The short answer to this is yes Borax does get rid of fleas.
First of all you need to locate where you think the fleas are living in your house, this could even be in a number of different places at the same time ie rugs, carpets, pet beds sofas, and under furniture you will need to treat all of theses areas with Borax in order for this treatment to work effectively.
You should choose a small area of carpet where you can carry out a spot test before you put Borax over all your carpet just to make sure it does not affect your carpet by changing the carpet colour or leave a stain. If this does happen then do not continue to use Borax in that area or in other rooms with the same carpet or flooring.
When you have completed the spot test then you are ready to start to treat the flea infested areas. You will only need to put a light sprinkling of Borax over the area you wish to treat. This will be more than enough!
Find an old brush and lightly brush over the area you have just sprinkled with Borax. This will allow the borax to work down into the carpet fibres to kill of any fleas or eggs that may have dropped down.
Now you must leave the treated area for 24 hours, allowing the borax time to work. Make sure that you keep any Pets and Children away from the treated area as the Borax is toxic and could be harmful to them. Also ensure that the treated area remains dry as the Borax will absorb moisture making it more difficult to clean up when ready.
After 24 hours has passed you should hoover up the Borax. I suggest that you use a vacuum that has a bag so that any fleas and eggas are contained inside and you are able to discard the bag at the end. If you are using a baglless vacuum then empty it outside and then give the dirt container a good clean with a cloth and a spray cleaner. Hoover the treated area several times to make sure all the borax is removed out of the area so it does not harm your pet. Once you are satisfied that you have removed all the Borax then you need to remove the hoover bag and discard it in the outside bin so you do not re infect your house again.
Remember that you will also need to check your pet and any bedding for fleas too otherwise the whole cycle will start again. Don?t ever use Borax on any pet bedding or on your pet, you will need to use an approved treatment, herbal remedy or flea comb.
